The club started as the Hertfordshire Guild of Sommeliers in 1985, and was run for many years by Dudley Sizeland, who has now retired to Australia. The membership still includes many wine professionals and keen presenters. The club motto is ‘To advance the understanding of fine wine in a congenial atmosphere’.
Presenters normally show discuss ten wines – there is time for questions or comments from the audience. Biscuits and water are provided – many members bring their own ISO glasses.
February will be our first meeting at the Hatfield Social Club, after many years at the Red Lion Hotel. The club is the 1960s building set back from the road – there is a large car park at the rear.
The annual dinner, in August, is held at Haileybury College, near Hertford. The committee buy and cellar bottles to show at the dinner – for the twentieth anniversary dinner, the wines were all from the 1985 vintage.
